The goal of the UFC Performance Institute (UFCPI) is to deliver performance-enhancing physical preparation, sport science, and medical services to the world’s best MMA and combat athletes.  Operating out of the 30,000sqft state-of-the-art UFCPI, our core values are aligned to maximizing the health and wellbeing of UFC athletes, and to support fighters and coaches in optimizing their training, preparation, and ultimately their performances in the octagon.

The successful candidate will join a world-class interdisciplinary team of service providers who have demonstrated their ability to deliver ‘world-leading’ support services to world-class mixed martial artists.  Integral to the way in which the UFCPI works is an emphasis on developing the individual physical requirements of each athlete, with support staff working as a multi- disciplinary team in the pursuit of optimal performance. The UFCPI encourages innovative ways of thinking yet challenges staff to be accountable for their input, and to provide a robust link to performance in all that they do.  Therefore, the post holder will be expected to understand the performance impact their work has on addressing the needs and demands of modern-day mixed martial artists.

Responsibilities:

  1. Work with the Director of Nutrition to develop, implement and monitor innovative and evidence-based practical nutrition strategies tailored to the requirements of world-class MMA fighters.
  2. Deliver individual and group nutrition consultation sessions to world-class MMA fighters.
  3. Actively promote the importance of food to enhance performance.
  4. Coach athletes through longitudinal weight management, weight classification strategies, and weight cutting for the sport of mixed martial arts.
  5. Engage with and support continuous athlete education relating to anti-doping and USADA testing procedures.

6.      Develop third-party consultant relationships and form strategic partnerships with industry leaders in performance nutrition and dietary supplementation.

  1. Develop and implement support systems to aid in athlete assessments, data collection and management.
  2. Undertake physiological assessments relating to performance nutrition; including DEXA, basal metabolic rate (BMR), and hydration monitoring.
  3. Strive to develop novel and innovative methodologies that serve to create world-leading working practices in the field of MMA-specific to nutrition.
  4. Ensure that the delivery of nutrition services effectively meets its commitment to athletes and coaches.
  5. Provide remote nutritional counselling through a variety of communication platforms to athletes situated around the world.
  6. Manage food service both via the UFCPI fueling station and in association with the on-site kitchen.
  7. Maintain a comprehensive, indexed database of work conducted with athletes and coaches.
  8. Work with other support staff to deliver an interdisciplinary approach to performance development.
  9. Where appropriate identify and facilitate appropriate communication methods to inform and educate athletes, coaches and the Vice President of Performance in the effective use of performance nutrition for MMA.
  10. Participate in ad hoc projects and or applied research across the organization as appropriate.
  11. Attend national and regional meetings and workshops, training courses and visiting national and regional sites on occasion and as appropriate.
  12. Within the rules of professional confidentiality, liase with athletes, primary care managers, coaches and other support staff as appropriate

Skills & Experience:

1.      Post Graduate Degree in Exercise Science or other related curriculum required.

2.      5+ years of experience in science, research, and sport nutrition fields.

3.      Practicing Registered Dietician (RD) or equivalent.

4.      Previous experience working effectively in a high-performance environment with elite athletes and coaches.

5.      Personal or professional experience in combat or contact sport is preferred, but not required.

6.      Understanding of the demands of the MMA sport (i.e. physical, physiology, gender-specific, weight categories, weight management, travel requirements, etc.).

7.      Understanding of existing evidence-based research, and the implementation of new research areas to enhance the sport, athletes, and coaches.

This position is based in Las Vegas, the UFC’s hometown and the Fight Capital of the World. Position Summary:

At the UFC Performance Institute (UFCPI) we deliver performance-impacting physical preparation, sport science, and medical services to the worlds best MMA and combat athletes.  Our core values are aligned to maximizing the health & wellbeing of UFC athletes, and to support athletes and coaches optimize their training, preparation, and ultimately performances in the octagon.

Within the UFCPI interdisciplinary team, the Director of Sport Science will play a critical role in the delivery of frontline support to elite MMA athletes.  The Director will manage and coordinate an extensive portfolio of sports science technologies and applications that are aligned to support and impact the health and performance of combat athletes.  Through the management of identified high priority sports science projects and interventions, the Director of Sports Science will provide expert solutions, advice and guidance to coaches, athletes, and the wider MMA community.  The Director will be required to demonstrate expertise in the assessment and monitoring of a variety of critical physical and physiological parameters; including cardiovascular function, cognition, biological markers, neuromuscular activity, strength and power diagnostics, and factors relating to recovery and regeneration.  Central to Director of Sports Science role will be the need to undertake extensive data handling, the aggregation of data and management of appropriate databases, and the ability to undertake rigorous data analytics in order to address key performance questions.  The Director of Sports Science will be required to be technically proficient in operating fundamental technologies within the facility, but will also be required to work independently on large scale data processing tasks that will be aligned to influence and inform the day-to-day operational strategies and approaches to programming that conducted within the institute.

The Director of Sports Science will be required to lead the development and delivery of key projects in collaboration with the Vice President of Performance and the other UFCPI staff.  As required, the Director of Sports Science will conduct bespoke research projects to directly address key questions/hypotheses relating to athlete health, wellbeing and performance enhancement.   Working as a key team member, this position will work side-by-side with respective Directors of Strength & Conditioning, Nutrition, and the medical services to support the delivery of technical solutions focused on athlete development.  The position will also work with team members to develop and deliver educational workshops and learning experiences that support the ongoing development of MMA as a sport.  This individual will experience a variety of working environments, and will be required to proactively collaborate and seek optimal cross-discipline initiatives within the Performance Institute.

Responsibilities:

1.      Direct sport science activities at the UFCPI with the objective of supporting athlete health, wellness, and performance.

2.      Undertake identified high priority sport science projects and conduct bespoke research activities in order to directly address key performance questions.

3.      Collaborate with other staff members on sports science applications that inform working practices and provide expert solution to technical priorities and needs.

4.      Conduct the maintenance, calibration and upkeep of sport science equipment and technologies within the UFCPI.

5.      Develop third-party relationships and form strategic partnerships with industry leaders in sport science.

6.      Conduct the management of appropriate databases and undertake data analytics and interrogation of objective metrics.

7.      Generate reports and data feedback mechanisms that promote the dissemination of data and performance insights.

8.      Present and communicate with a variety of senior personnel, technical directors, coaches and athletes.

9.      Understand the theory, research and scientific applications as they relate to elite level MMA athletes.

Skills & Experience:

1.      Post Graduate Degree in Exercise Science or other related curriculum required.

2.      5+ years of high-level technical management experience in sport science and research.

3.      Previous experience working effectively in a high performance environment with elite athletes and coaches.

4.      Personal or professional experience in combat or contact sport is preferred, but not required.

5.      Knowledge and experience of sport science technologies and innovation.

6.      The ability to perform sport science research and projects independently, and to apply the findings of that research.

7.      Experience undertaking large-scale data analytics and the interrogation of objective performance metrics.

8.      Excellent presentation and communication skills, both written and oral, that can motivate behavioral change and to have a positive impact on performance.

9.      Ability to communicate complex data in terms that are easily understood by a wide range of audiences.

10.  Understanding of existing evidence-based research, and the implementation of new research areas to enhance the sport, athletes, and coaches.
